Johannesburg, May 27, 2020 – Enko Education celebrated Africa through a digital art contest aimed at learners of the continent.

As a network of 15 African International schools that empowers learners to access high-quality education and prestigious universities, Africa Day is an important celebration for Enko Education. For the occasion, the group organized My Africa Is, a digital art contest to offer learners aged 6 to 18 from all over the continent the opportunity to illustrate what Africa means to them through 5 categories: Drawing, Music, Photography, Poetry, Cooking.

To decide the winners, Enko Education gathered a prestigious jury of African artists who had to vote for the best creations in each category. The jury was composed of

  • Ricardo Marcus K,  South African fashion photographer at OSU, a creative production house that represents talented Black film directors and photographers: “There’s a lot of talent in Africa, there was a lot of great images in the photography category but I chose a winner: Maathai’s image because there was so much reality to it”.
  • Marguerite Bamba Aida, Ivorian food critic, and social blogger for Serial Foodie. She has more than 16 000 food lover followers!
  • Estelle Hughes, Cameroonian singer and music player. She is also the president of Africa Learning International, an NGO dedicated to developing and providing innovative and impactful teacher professional development on the African continent.
  • Lamazone Wassawaney, Ivorian author and founding publisher of Les Editions Camé-Lion, a Publishing house with pioneering projects in the field of literature
  • Salifou Lindou, Cameroonian, sculptor and painter. Very engaged, his paintings depict society and current events. His favorite theme, born from his encounters with the Doual’Art association, is ‘urban’.

More than 170 African learners from 10 African countries participated in the contest. All winners have been rewarded cultural prizes: a virtual tour of the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar and a private lesson with the judge expert in the category.

Students were really happy to participate in the contest and we received a lot of positive feedback: “It was a pleasure for me to participate in this contest!”

Laurine Tagum, 17 years old, studies at Enko Waca in Senegal and won the first prize in the drawing category: “I decided to represent Africa this way to showcase its joy, diversity and solidarity between its people. And despite the hardships of life, they will always remain united”.

“We are really happy and proud to see the enthusiasm of students in this contest and their eagerness to represent Africa! They’ve done a beautiful tribute to the continent and we encourage them to believe in their passion and in themselves! “ shared Eric Pignot, Founder and CEO of Enko Education.
