Africa’s Enko Education Makes History at Yale College

Johannesburg, January 31st, 2017 – Enko Education is very proud to announce the admission of its student Fred Jr. Ebongue Makolle to the prestigious Yale College in the United States. Fred is the first student from Cameroon to enrol at Yale College in at least 15 years [1]. He has been awarded a 92% scholarship, representing $180,000 over 4 years.

Yale University is part of the Ivy League, a group of world-renowned and highly sought-after universities in the United States, known for leading students to high academic excellence and bright careers. With an admission rate of only 6.3%, Yale is one of the most selective members of the Ivy League. Moreover, international students at Yale represent only 11% of the total undergraduate population.

Fred is an Upper 6 (Grade 12) student at Enko La Gaieté International School in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

“I am thrilled by this admission, and so excited to start at Yale. This admission could never have become a reality without the full support of the entire Enko staff: during the application process, I could easily approach any teacher whether it was concerning academics, getting a recommendation letter or reviewing my university application essays. Enko really made this admission possible” says Fred.

In small classes, never exceeding more than 24 students, Enko learners receive continuous support from their teachers, who are intensively trained by highly experienced international Heads of School. They are also guided by Enko’s University Admission Counsellors in the preparation of their applications to seek admission and scholarships to top universities and summer programmes. For instance, Fred, along with three Enko classmates, attended the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) summer programme in July 2016. “The YYAS is a highly selective week-long academic enrichment programme designed for high-achieving secondary school students.” enthusiastically explains Laura Kaub, YYAS program manager.

Fred’s classmates also benefit from the Enko Education mission to provide an excellent secondary education and superior support services for their students to enter the world’s best universities. Over 60% of the class have already received conditional early admission to prestigious universities ranked in the world’s Top 100 such as Imperial College London, Durham University or King’s College London in the UK, as well as Hult Business School in San Francisco in the US.
